Moissanite was originally discovered in a meteor crater in 1893 by scientist Henri Moissan. He mistakenly believed the crystals he found were diamonds. Naturally occurring moissanite is extremely rare. Because of this, most of the moissanite on the market is lab grown. It can take 2-3 months to create a single moissanite stone in a lab.

Most people cannot tell the difference between moissanite and diamonds. The GIA has even said that moissanite is “much closer to diamond in overall appearance and heft than any previous diamond imitation.”

One way to tell apart moissanite from diamond is to examine the stone’s brilliance and fire. Moissanite has more fire and brilliance than diamond – it isn’t as noticeable in smaller stones, but in stones over 5mm, it’s much more noticeable. Moissanite is known for its “disco ball” effect because rainbow light quickly flashes around the gem. However, looking at a stone’s fire and brilliance isn’t always a reliable way to differentiate the two because an expertly cut diamond will also have lots of fire and brilliance. 

🎈 What's Old European Cut (OEC)?

Old European Cut Diamonds (OEC) are an antique type diamond cut born of a time before modern technology enabled the precise geometry we see modern diamond cutters use. The Old European Cut evolved from the Old Mine Cut, with their trademark small tables, heavy crowns, deep angles, and large, visible culet.  

The OEC is a chunkier cut, so the flashes of colour are bigger. It’s not as rainbowy as the RB, and the sparkle isn’t as uniform. I think this is what makes the OEC seem more “sparkly”. Every time it moves, the light bounces off the stone in a different way. Also, the sparkle is more white, whereas I think the RB sparkle is more rainbow. For me, I prefer the sparkle of the OEC because it’s not so flashy. It’s a more understated sparkle. However, it’s still more colourful than a diamond or white sapphire, just moissanite toned down.

✨What is the treatment process, if any?

Scientists in the 1990s began experimenting in the same High Pressure High Temperature (HPHT) equipment for ways to change diamond color. This led to high pressure, high temperature color treatment. So, HPHT treated diamonds are real, natural mined diamonds that undergo the HPHT process to enhance their color.

The treatment permanently turns brownish diamonds into colorless stones. It can also create fancy colored diamonds from yellowish looking diamonds. Since the original color was brownish or yellowish, the resulting treated diamonds are still less expensive than their untreated counterparts. An HPHT treated diamond is a great option because it is a natural diamond that comes at a fraction of the cost.

✨Are any artificial colors or chemicals added?

There are no artificial colors or chemicals included in the process. They are not irradiated.

✨Does it alter the composition?

The process may or may not alter the composition. It remains a true diamond nevertheless. Once our diamonds are heat-treated, it may move the molecules. This is where testing can vary depending who tests it. We will always have a positive diamond testing video available. They are genuine earth mined diamonds, not moissanite or CZ. If you use a jeweler's loop you can see this by their molecular composition.

A Moissanite is man-made whereas these diamonds are earth-mined.

✨My Jeweler says these are not Diamonds?

Diamonds are rare and hence opinions may vary from person to person. We have found some Jewelers do not like online competition as it is one lost customer to them. Any opinions of any Jeweler, Gemologist, Appraiser, etc. will not be accepted to judge the authenticity of our diamonds. Please evaluate our certification process and unique ability to price prior to purchasing.

We mine and sometimes, depending on custom work, buy the rough diamond rock in large quantities and have direct cutting and polishing facility local to that. We send out for certification after cutting and polishing is completed. This avoids many middlemen. We avoid pricey overhead by being available here online with Etsy. The end product is a great price for you.
